Highlights introduces Puzzle Readers, a new line of leveled readers that merges its signature Hidden Pictures® puzzles with original stories for an immersed reading experience, perfect for every kind of learner. Developed in collaboration with reading experts, Puzzle Readers ($4.99, April 2020) motivate children to read the story, solve the puzzle and read the story again, reinforcing their learning and providing them with a sense of accomplishment and, consequently, a love of reading.
“In developing the Puzzle Readers, we asked: How do we create a learn-to-read experience that’s innovative and supports all kind of learners,” said Mary-Alice Moore, Executive Vice President, Business Strategy and Product Development at Highlights. “We know that puzzling helps children develop both academic and social-emotional skills, including letter recognition, attention to detail, vocabulary building, persistence, logic, and employing multiple strategies to solve problems. Above all, Puzzle Readers does so with humor, which lessens learning anxiety and increases a child’s engagement – particularly valuable for reluctant and non-traditional learners.”
For children ages 4-7, the new line launches with two titles in Level One and Level Two:
- Level One: Let’s Explore Reading introduces loveable characters Nick and Nack as they learn how to build a birdhouse and fly a kite. Level One readers present five of the same hidden objects in each puzzle and include a bonus STEM activity to boost hands-on learning.
- Level Two: Let’s Read, Read, Read kicks off with a couple adventures for Kit and Kaboodle as they go camping and hop on a train ride. Level Two readers include eight hidden objects in each puzzle, with a packing list/visual dictionary at the end that encourages re-reading.
Reading experts were consulted to ensure that Puzzle Readers leveled with both Lexile and Fountas & Pinnell Text Level Gradient system. They advised on everything from sentence length, to vocabulary, to pairing levels with curriculum, making these early readers classroom, school library, and home library ready. In addition, by solving the puzzles kids will foster essential reading and learning skills such as shape and letter recognition, letter-sound relationships, logic, visual discrimination, flexible thinking and sequencing.
